"But I'm not flexible enough to do yoga."

“I want to come to yoga, but I’m not flexible enough yet.”
This is something I’ve heard A LOT. It’s not hard to think of yoga as something you have to be “ready” for before trying for the first time. But the truth is, this idea misses the whole point. Yoga isn’t something you get to do once your body is ready for it, and it’s not something you earn once your body changes. Yoga helps your body and mind change in the first place.
You’ve probably heard me quote my favorite phrase, “Saying you’re too inflexible for yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to take a bath.”
Yoga meets you exactly where you are, and it works with what you bring to the table. And while flexibility can certainly improve over time, that’s really more of a happy side effect than the actual goal and purpose of yoga. The REAL heart of yoga runs so much deeper than being able to touch your toes or have perfect balance.
What yoga really offers, and what keeps people coming back to their mat day after day, has so much more to do with how you FEEL than how you LOOK.
Yoga gives you a space to slow down in a world that rarely does.
It teaches you how to breathe in a way that calms your nervous system, not just during class, but during real-life stressful moments too.
Yoga helps you notice tension you’re carrying without realizing it, and offers a way to release it.
It builds an awareness that makes it easier to respond rather than react.
Yoga supports mental clarity, emotional regulation, and that steady feeling of being a little more grounded off the mat in your own everyday life.
Over time, people who practice regularly often notice they’re sleeping better, feeling less overwhelmed, handling their stress differently, and even meeting themselves with more patience and understanding.
Strength improves. Mobility improves. And yes, flexibility often improves along the way, too, but it is more of a happy little bonus rather than the main event.
At its very core, yoga is about connection. It’s learning how to check in with yourself, listen to what your body is asking for, and build a relationship with your mind that is supportive rather than critical. Yoga isn’t about getting it “right”. It’s about showing up, paying attention, and giving yourself a chance to feel a little more at home in your own body.
If you haven’t tried yoga yet because you thought you were too limited to truly practice, take this as an invitation. Come to our Supported Yoga and Strength classes or Gentle Yoga classes and see what you’ve been missing. You’re going to get so many more benefits than just being able to stretch a little better, fold a little deeper, or even stand on one foot for longer periods of time.
